On Tuesday 5th September 2006 I went to see The Backbeat Beatles who were playing at the Playhouse Theatre in Cheltenham. The band was led by CHRIS O'NEILL, the person who played GEORGE HARRISON in the film BackBeat and was JOHN LENNON the last time I saw them in 1997 (9 year ago).
The line-up of the BACKBEAT BEATLES was:-
The first half of the show was taken up with performances of SHE LOVES YOU, HARD DAYS NIGHT, CAN'T BUY ME LOVE, AND I LOVE HER, HELP, DRIVE MY CAR, NOWHERE MAN, and an excellent version of TAXMAN to name a few.
The second half started with SGT. PEPPER followed by WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS with PENNY LANE, A DAY IN THE LIFE, ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE, also being performed before Paul had a solo spot for BLACKBIRD and YESTERDAY which made me think of Linda. Just before Yesterday he started singing I CAN'T HELP FALLING IN LOVE, which made me think of the BackBeat film where Stu starts to sing.
We then came to the last part of the show which started with a superb acoustic version of ACROSS THE UNIVERSE, and continued with GET BACK, COME TOGETHER and GOLDEN SLUMBERS / CARRY THAT WEIGHT / THE END before performing HEY JUDE.
All the songs were performed so well that when the songs were over I expected to hear the next song from the respective albums, that's how good I thought they were.
I now look forward to seeing them again perhaps with CHRIS O'NEILL as Ringo (as this is the only Beatle he hasn't been).
After the show I spoke to CHRIS O'NEILL who asked me "who my favourite Beatle was" to which I replied "I haven't got a favourite, I liked them all in fact there is only one song of The Beatles I did not like", to which he replied "REVOLUTION NUMBER 9", I said "yes" and he agreed.
